Visit Antequera And Step Back In Time

Visiting Antequera is like stepping inside a time portal. You feel as if you are transported back to the past right to the Bronze Age. This Andalucian town is filled with baroque temples, Roman baths, ancient burial grounds, Gothic churches and fountains that have been built thousands of years ago. There are exactly 55 historic and cultural sites in Antequera that are worth visiting.

Antequera is located in the centre of Andalusia, in the Malaga province. The town of Antequera has been around for centuries and even as far back as the prehistoric times. Its culture is an amalgamation of all the cultures of its past inhabitants including the Moores, Dolmens, Romans and the native Iberians. The town is specifically located in the La Vega plains and in close proximity to the Guadalhorce River. Antequear has one of the most fertile and productive farmlands in Andalucia because of the irrigation provided by the Guadalhorce River. The crops and produce of the Antequera farmlands include sunflowers, cereals, olives, asparagus and different kinds of fruits.

When vacationing in Antequera, it is absolutely necessary to visit the Dolmens which is the oldest part of the town. This is where you can see the impressive megalithic sites that include the Menga, Romeral and Viera monuments villa spain. The Dolmens is the most ancient part of the Antequera since it was built during the Neolithic Age which is approximately 6,500 years ago. The Dolmens is also considered to be the oldest farming community in Europe.

Religious structures are also a major part of the tourist attractions in Antequera. There are plenty of magnificent churches scattered all over the town. The most magnificent churches in the town include the churches of Belen, San Jose, Madre de Dios, Nuestra Senora del Carmen, San Jose, Los Remedios and Santiago to name a few.

While visiting Antequera, it is also a must to make a trip to the Torcal which is one of the major tourist attractions of the town. The Torcal is a magnificent mountain range made of limestone. Erosion over the years has carved out various forms from the surface of the limestone.

The weather in Antequera is typically hot during the months of July to August. The temperatures can range from 35 – 40 degrees during these months making it very hot and dry in the town during the day. The best time to visit Antequera would be in the spring or autumn when the weather is more moderate.

Aside from the monuments, ancient structures and historic sites, Antequera also has plenty of cafeterias, tapas bars and local restaurants that serve dishes from the region and other specialties of the Spanish cuisine.
